Host families needed
ASSE International Student Exchange is now accepting applications from host families for the 2010-2011 academic year. By hosting a foreign exchange student from Germany, France, Spain, Mexico, Scandinavia, Portugal, Czech Republic, China, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and former Soviet Union countries, you provide a rewarding opportunity to a special teenager. These personable and academically select exchange students are bright, curious and anxious to learn about this country through living as part of a family, attending high school and sharing their own culture and language with their newly adopted host family. All students are well screened, insured, speak English and come with their own spending money. The students arrive from their home country shortly before school begins and return at the end of the school year.

It’s story time…under the stars!
When night descends on Monday evening, Aug. 30, it’s time for the kids to descend onto the lawn at the Larchmont Library. There, tucked under their blankets, they’ll hear entertaining nighttime stories read by Fire Chief John Caparelli. There will also be milk and cookies to enjoy, along with the stories.
For Pre-k children, the readings will begin at 6:30 p.m. For k-2 children, Jane Axelrod and Wendy Raso will be reading summertime stories at 7:30 p.m. This event is sponsored by Friends of the Larchmont Library. So come out, come out, wherever you are on Aug. 30 and spend a lovely evening in the great outdoors, right outside the Larchmont Library.
(In case of rain, the blankets will be moved inside.)

Host families provide room and board and guidance for their new son or daughter while experiencing the joy of watching a child grow academically and culturally. Each exchange student expects to bear his or her share of the household responsibilities as well as be included in normal family activities.  When sharing your home with a student from another culture, your lives are enriched forever by your new lifelong friendship!
Couples, single parents and families without children are encouraged to apply. For additional information about hosting an ASSE exchange student call Amy at 1-800-677-2773. Also, visit www.asse.com for additional opportunities through ASSE!

Meals on Wheels of Larchmont/Mamaroneck needs your help
The Town of Mamaroneck Community Services Office administers the Meals on Wheels Program to senior residents of the Town of Mamaroneck and the Villages of Larchmont and Mamaroneck who are age 60 and older.
Volunteers are needed to deliver meals to home-bound senior citizens in our community. Meals are picked up from a local catering service and delivered to seniors between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. A car is needed for delivery.
One hour a week is all it takes! Volunteers may work alone or in “teams.” At least one member of the team must be 18 years of age or older and must have a car and a valid driver’s license.
This is a great opportunity for parents and children to team up on a Saturday morning for one hour, to help senior citizens in our community. Anyone with an hour to spare during weekdays (and most holidays) is welcome to volunteer.
