More than 750 people turned out for Larchmont’s second annual Bastille Day celebration, which was much expanded from last year’s one-block affair; this year it stretched from Boston Post Road to Addison Street along Larchmont Avenue, which was closed to traffic from 6 to approximately 10 p.m. on July 14.
Called a Bastille Day Block Party, it was organized by Larchmont merchants, led by the owners of Auray Gourmet and Espana Restaurant. Tables were set up on the street and sidewalks, where visitors could purchase featured food from an international array of area restaurants – French cuisine as well as Spanish and Japanese. There was music by local musicians and activities for children. Alex Eney, son of Larchmont Trustee Jaine Elkind Eney, designed T-shirts reading “Vive Larchmont” (Long live Larchmont), which were offered for sale by several Larchmont trustees. (The shirts are still available for $10-15 at the Village Clerk’s Office.)

French native and musician Armelle Gloaguen led the large number of kids in song; Larchmont resident Melanie Rose, owner of Beadz, offered them the chance to create their own bracelets and necklaces; and a human dressed as a leopard entertained as only a small leopard can. Local talent Michael Nappi returned to play music for grownups, and a raffle was held to benefit HOPE Community Services of New Rochelle.
